Thermal Emission from HII Galaxies: Discovering the Youngest Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
We studied the radio properties of very young massive regions of star formation in HII galaxies, with the aim of detecting episodes of recent star formation in an early phase of evolution where the first supernovae start to appear. Our sample consists of 31 HII galaxies, characterized by strong Hydrogen emission lines, for which low resolution VLA 3.5 cm and 6 cm observations were obtained. We complemented these observations with archival data at 20 cm. We found that the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) has a range of behaviours; 1) there are galaxies where the SED is characterized by a synchrotron-type slope, 2) galaxies with a thermal slope, and, 3) galaxies with possible free-free absorption at long wavelengths. The latter SEDs were found in a few galaxies (e.g. UM533, Tololo 1223-388) and represent a signature of heavily embedded massive star clusters closely related to the early stages of massive star formation. Based on the comparison of the star formation rates (SFR) determined from the recombination lines and those determined from the radio emission we find Visiting Fellow, IoA, Cambridge.

Australia Telescope Compact Array Survey of Candidate Ultra-Compact and Buried HII Regions in the Magellanic Clouds
We present a systematic survey for ultracompact H II (UCH II ) regions in the Magellanic Clouds. Understanding the physics of massive star formation (MSF) is a critical astrophysical problem. The study of MSF began in our galaxy with surveys of UCH II regions, but before now this has not been done for other galaxies. We selected candidates based on their Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) c...
متن کاملProbing Star Formation at Low Metallicity: the Radio Emission of Super Star Clusters in Sbs0335−052
We present high-resolution radio continuum observations of the nascent starburst in the metalpoor galaxy SBS 0335−052. These radio data were taken with the Very Large Array and include observations at 0.7 cm, 1.3 cm, 2 cm, 3.6 cm, and 6 cm. These observations enable us to probe the thermal radio nebulae associated with the extremely young star-forming regions in this galaxy. Two discrete and lu...
متن کاملThe Nature of Radio Continuum Emission in the Dwarf Starburst
We present new multi-frequency radio continuum imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC625 obtained with the Very Large Array. Data at 20, 6, and 3.6 cm reveal global continuum emission dominated by free-free emission, with only mild synchrotron components. Each of the major H ii regions is detected; the individual spectral indices are thermal for the youngest regions (showing largest Hα emiss...

We present the results of 11 elliptical galaxies with strong nebular emission lines during our study of star formation history along the Hubble sequence. After removing the dilution from the underlying old stellar populations by use of stellar population synthesis model, we derive the accurate fluxes of all emission lines for these objects, which are later classified with emission line ratios i...
متن کاملThree Spectacular HII-buried-AGN Galaxies from SDSS
We present our analysis of the three HII-buried-AGN: SDSS J091053+333008, SDSS J121837+091324, and SDSS J153002-020415, by studying their optical spectra extracted from SDSS. The location in the BPT diagnostic diagrams of the three galaxies indicates that the narrow emission lines are mainly exited from HII regions. However, after the removal of the host galaxy’s stellar emission, the emission ...
